The Dave Walker Guide to the Church

Finally got hold of Dave’s book at the end of last week and I have to say it is hilariously funny (even my mother in-law thought so!) if you have ever asked questions about the Church especially the Church of England or wondered about some of the strange traditions then this book has the definitive answers, well the funny ones anyway the only negative comment I can make about it is that you should not have this book anywhere near where you work as it will distract you and you will spend the afternoon laughing instead of working! Click on the title to find out where you can get a copy or use the details below to order it from a local book shop, for those of you looking for more ideas for Christmas presents for those too old for the CD’s mentioned below this book has to be a good choice for anybody involved in church life!

Thats just silly!

Well I mentioned in my last post about so rearranging behind the scenes to get a new site up, well site might be a little bit of an exaggeration but it is a start, I intend to put a couple more pictures on soon and hopefully will also add more detail but I think it does the job, the site can be found at www.sillysimon.co.uk if your interested.

Downtime, updates and other stuff!

If you have tried to access the blog at all between Saturday night and this morning (Monday) then you may well have been greeted with a 404 error message. I have been doing some rearranging on my server to make things work a bit better as I am soon planning to launch another site (well a couple of pages anyway) on a different domain but hosted on the same space, anyway enough of technical details it should all work fine now.
You may remember that a little while ago I talked about producing a new look, it is still being worked on, anyone who has in the past tried looking at the host site notashamed will have seen something very out of date, that site is no longer up so you will get an error message at the moment for anything other than the blog address here, as I get that site sorted I will be bringing the blog into the new look that that site will have!
Lastly I am aware that recently I have not updated the blog as often as I should, things have been very busy and are continuing that way at the moment, for this reason I have now added the option to subscribe to the blog via email, all you need to do is enter your email address in the box on the right, my blog will then be emailed to you on a daily basis (assuming I have written something you will not be sent blanks if I have not done so!) I hope you will find this new feature useful.

Cheers for now.

death threats against Jamie Oliver?

Yesterday was our first visit into the local secondary school since the law has changed about the sale of sweets, now don’t get me wrong I think this is a good idea and I had often felt guilty about the amount of junk we sold to the young people in the school but needless to say the move was not popular and several young people were making death threats on Jamie Oliver.
The problem I am having is finding realistic affordable alternatives, or even advice on what particular things are acceptable, I’m sure there are some things that if your read the blurb may sound fine (fruit winders for instance) that the young people will tell me are fine and they like and they say things like 70% fruit, but the trouble is they are also 30% sugar which I think then defeats the object. And what you get as regular health food snacks cost a lot more money, why spend 30p on a 20g bag of raisins when you could get a 20g bag of haribo for 10p. Does anyone else have these issues, I appreciate that not everyone is trying to run something like a tuck shop in a school, if anyone has found reasonably priced healthy snacks for a tuck shop type setting I would love to know where.

Cheers.

Tale2Tell

I’ve got to tell you about this, not just because this is a friend of mine but because it is brilliant! Tale2Tell is a new series of Bible stories (not new Bible stories but retellings) aimed primarily at children but not exclusively. The stories are available for individual download or you can buy a CD of ten stories (there are 12 CD’s in total). Each story also has a short study guide to help you talk with the children about the stories.
The web site has a downloadable edited version of one of the stories for you to sample, I downloaded this on Saturday afternoon sitting in the lounge, as I played the story my two boys (Aged 4¾ & 2¾) stopped playing with their toys and came and stood next to me to listen, Zac (the older one) then said “I like that Daddy!”
The web site and everything have been very well produced, if you have children, nieces and nephews, God children or children of good friends or if you work with them I would HIGHLY recommend this site and these stories, they would make fantastic Christmas/birthday gifts (we will certainly be giving some as presents this Christmas (sorry if that spoils a surprise for some readers!))
Go on take a look and have a listen!
